actresses – musicians – visual artists – direction
The Dutch actresses MB & IT studied theatre at the Herman Teirlinck Theatre Academy in Antwerp.
Since their finals in 2004 they have developed in Holland a lot of activities as actress, director and theatre teacher in all kind of different fields. With a rich stage experience in monologues, smaller and bigger ensembles, they are very well equipped for this project. Their sparkling different appearance, character and play accents, they complement each other very suggestive and precise.
The directing of the play is in hands of LD, in cooperation with the stage artists.
The musicians in this project, TG & MG, are from Poland and they are often working or living for a while in Amsterdam.
Pianist Tomasz Górny, studied in Kraków, Toulouse, Düsseldorf and Amsterdam. He is specialized in the relationship between music and literature. Tomasz is coordinating the music part in this production. He is a professional classic pianist and organist. Magdalena Golebiowska is beside pianist and composer also a singer songwriter and an exceptional jazz singer. Her voice plays a surprising part in this performance from time to time.
These excellent musicians are very well equipped for this performance to execute the written music but also in completing each other in their different qualities. In certain scenes they improvise also on the piano, as part of the play, in interaction with each other or with the actresses.
The birth of this project Piano Etudes, took place in São Paulo, almost two years ago, in September 2013. Leo Divendal was guiding a workshop with Brazilian artists: the architecture of autobiography. He did chose a picture from Daniele Queiroz and proposed an exchange with one of his own pictures. This picture of her can be seen as a first germ of this project.
Since a few years Divendal is guiding workshops to participants of study groups at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo, organized by the Brazilian artist and photographer Marcelo Greco.
After having written a few texts relating to the piano, three artists, Daniele Queiroz, Helena Rios and Flavia Tojal started to translate them into Portuguese, based on Divendals English versions. It’s with them that he did continue working out this Poiano Etudes project for visual artists to take part. The texts, originally written in Dutch and translated by the author into English as well, were delivered to twenty Brazilian artists, all known through the workshop experiences: photographers, architects, designers.
The participating Brazilian artists are:
Rafaël Godoy, Marina Piedade, Rogério Fernandes, Marcelo Greco, Paula Gabbai, Márcio Távora, Bernardo Dorf, Marcelo Guarnieri, Lígia Lupo, Vicente Carvalho, Lu dal Ri, Daniele Queiroz, Laura Daviña, Flávia Tojal, Beatriz Pontes, Helena Rios, Patricia Araujo, Luciana Mendonca, Renata Angerami and Bel Falleiros.
Leo Divendal also did ask twenty European artists to react visually on the texts. He has worked with them during his teaching work at the GRA in Amsterdam between 1994 and 2013. Nine of them are Dutch, eleven from other European countries: Spain, France, Slovakia, Norway Czech, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Swiss. Ten from twenty artists are living and working in Amsterdam.
The participant European artists are:
Popel Coumou, Elisabeth Maas, Hanne Lippard, Katarina Hruskova, Tudor Bratu, Nicole Segers, Elsa-Louise Manceaux, Hanna Mattes, Sònia Fort Abad, Sara Glahn, Vojtech Aubrecht, Alice Murray, Venus Veldhoen, Mirte Slaats, Tania Theodorou, Sonia de Jager, Mieke Woestenburg, Edwin Deen, Virginie Rebetez and Ruth van Beek.
All forty artists did make on his request –as entrance ticket for the project- a spontaneous drawing from a piano, coming from a memory. These drawings are used in the performance also.
