‘As you are all SURELY aware, August 15th is one of the biggest feast days of Orthodoxy, and my official Name-day! Since as most of you know, I am such a devout believer I plan to observe the holiday in the traditional way: Open house/block party at mine from five o clock on! B.Y.O.B. and whatever you want to throw on our tiny grill…I’ll have a couple of bottles of ouzo and plenty of ice waiting!’
Tania Theodorou did write this, just before 15 August. She is one of the artists who have made a contribution to the Piano Etudes, reacting on my invitation with a visual work, based on one of the special chosen stories of the twenty ones. Twenty Brazilian and European artists. On each story from two sides, ‘crossing the ocean’, a visual reflection, an addition, a lighter! All these artists I did teach them once, short or long time ago. In that sense we have met each other and did learn to know each other, in a process of etudes, practises, learning. Doesn’t Theodorou mean, ‘God-given present’? She surely is!
Tania has been born in Greece and is going back home regularly. Often in summertime. Family, friends, a great social person, who is looking for company and cooperation’s and is connecting all the time. When I did ask the artists to draw ‘blind’ a piano, or a grand piano, from the memory, she offered a complete series. You can see in this series that she merged in so completely, as in a stream.
Why I introduce her as the first one of the artists, is because one of her ‘drawings’ became the logo in the Piano Etudes project. On top of the website you see the black keys of the piano, totally on themselves, as a touch of the obscure in a soft ochre field. It’s a typical ‘Tania-work’. Very spontaneous expressed, in a clear and compact form, at the same time totally free and without fashionable conditions.

That her work has become part of the logo for me is very clear and also a spontaneous choice. Her work jumps in the eye, as a soft splinter that doesn’t hurt. It’s almost touchable and at the same time surreal, and then again it seems to slip away.
The work she has made inspired by one of the Etudes is at least so special: the nude sleepwalker Vicente sitting at the piano… What happened to him and who did see him? How he is able to play the piano unconsciously that virtuoso? Tania’s portrait has been made just like that more or less I think. In such a nocturnal effective pose, in which you feel that she did surround to it completely as asleep, as a uncontrolled self-evident movement, which fits exactly and is moving you. Later on this work of her will be projected in the fifteenth scene, ‘sleepwalking-piano’, one of the twenty short stories of the Piano Etudes, soon in your theatre! See: www.pianoetudes.nl
