Also some other pieces are specially composed for Piano Etudes, like Piano Fingers from Tomasz Górny, the other pianist, inspired by the dynamics of the same titled etude, nr 3. The third composer, who wrote original music especially for Piano Etudes, is Cees Thissen. That became cooing, chinking & culminating, in etude 18. Two of the three compositions can be heard in the play, integrated in the dynamics of the final phase, but completely recorded by Cees himself. For him it was a very special assignment because normally he composes his music on existing texts, given or self-chosen. This is how our cooperation always has been since the sixties and has resulted in a lot of songs.
Highlights in our cooperation are: Washing ashore a strange coast and Suite Vézelienne, both based on a cycle of texts, the first one performed by two singers and a small ensemble, the Suite just by four voices, for the first time performed in Vézelay in 2007.
Recently we did something new, this time by demand of Cees, to make visuals on a composition he did on a poem by John McGrae, In Flanders Fields. This had to result in a dvd, as an integrated experience. In Brazil my friends did help me to make the montage from the footage I made on the Flemish battlefields, in still lifes and fragments filmed on a geographical map.
All these performances, Washing ashore, Suite Vézelienne and In Flanders Fields, are published by ourselves and they are still available (www.leodivendal.nl).
Other compositions in he Etudes have a storytelling link. Like Federico Mompou’s Cançon I danse nr 6, that plays an essential part in Carlos Saura’s Cria Cuervos, on which etude 8 reflects intensively. And the Gnossiennes of Eric Satie play a part in etude 10 and 11, the piano teacher.
Sometimes you hear a composition after an etude, another one already during the performance of the etude. All the time the choice has been made to find the best connection between story and music, autonomous, then again supporting or being a part of the story itself.
The music plays also a part in relation to the projected images, just like in films.
Music is a wondrous, abstract space, influencing the mood intensively and because of that very useful for film and theatre. Music plays a personage that touches the story; a layer that creates colours that can fool you or offer space for your own musings.
Piano Etudes is a composition in which story, play, image, music integrate, with the piano as red thread, as a unique model in many shapes.
