It started like this: there was a wood in a, in which b together with c and d had built a stage, for which e years before had already made a roof decoration. The stage became a striking small theatre in province f, where you could often go and see performances, as I remember g on a Sunday afternoon in h and where you could see dance i and j dancing to the music of k. Sometimes there were song contests, which were frequently visited.
One morning the ladies l en m went to a sold out performance with two actresses n and o and two pianists p and q, something with ‘etudes’, stories and a piano. They were late, so a lot of people were sitting in front of them. They didn’t mind, l was modest, but m stood up just like that when she thought she needed it and l followed her. Arriving a little later, I stood behind them and couldn’t see through very well. Sometimes they moved apart and then I could catch a glimpse of the performance.
I was there with r and s, who were also inconvenienced by this. R being more brutal than me, tapped m on her shoulder, but she didn’t react at all. So we only had the sound of the piano left. But as the performance continued, the sound became softer and at the end you didn’t hear anything anymore, even though it was not yet finished.
Later on I visited t and u, maybe they could tell me how the performance ended. T couldn’t remember much, u thought there had been a happy end but could ask v and w who were there, closer to the stage, but they didn’t understand much. Some time later I went to a fashion shop in x, to ask if they had a similar bowler hat, unfortunately they were not in production anymore. On my recent journey to y I did find a beret on the way, which z on seeing me said I looked like a real Frenchman.
